Shibe Park, circa 1930
Source: I acquired this image on eBay around 1998, and have been unable to find this or a similar image on the Internet. I am assuming the image is in the public domain.
Photo Subject: Shibe Park World Series crowd? Because of the crowd size, I am guessing this is a World Series game, probably between the Philadelphia Athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals (1930 or 1931) or the Chicago Cubs (1929). The new grandstand, built in 1929 is in place, which gives further credence to my guess on the date of this image.
Fun Fact: The 61-year history of Shibe Park (Connie Mack Stadium after 1952) saw baseball Philadelphia style. Over its long life, Shibe Park would be home to two of baseball’s greatest dynasties (1902 to 1914 and 1927 to 1931), the $100,000 Infield, a jaw-dropping pennant race collapse (The Phold), and an awful lot of awful baseball. The fans were often far from civilized—this is Philadelphia after all—but through thick and (mostly) thin, they loved this place.
Painting Detail: Printed on 16” x 20” fiber-board with a matte finish and painted using Marshall’s oil paints. Finer details were made using Prismacolor pencils.
Painting Inaccuracy: Early drawings of the cupola and office siding is often shown as lime green. Later images show these structure in the darker gray as I have painted them.
