Photographer: Unknown, but believed to be in the public domain
Photo Subject: Murderers Row - The 1927 New York Yankees infield consisting of Lou Gehrig at 1st base, Tony Lazzeri at 2nd base, Mark Koenig at shortstop and Joe Dugan at 3rd base.
Fun Fact: Considered one of the best baseball teams assembled, the bats of the 1927 Yankees were dubbed Murders’ Row. The team boasted seven future Hall of Famers: Pitchers Herb Pennock and Waite Hoyt, Infielders Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri, outfielders Babe Ruth and Earle Combs, and Manager Miller Huggins.
While other teams have been considered as candidates of the best ever (1907 Chicago Cubs, 1929 Philadelphia Athletics, 1975 Cincinnati Reds), the 1927 Yankees are always included in the everyone’s top three.
Painting Detail: Printed on 13” x 19” canvas and painted using Schmincke Mussini and Marshall’s oil paints. Finer details, like the Yankee pinstripes, were made using Prismacolor pencils.
