Joe Cronin, 1933
Photographer: Charles Conlon
Photo Subject: Joe Cronin, shortstop for the Washington Senators, posing with a bat in front of dugout.
Fun Fact: If you look closely at the image, you will notice a bandage on Joe Cronin’s left thumb. In 1932 he was struck by a pitch on the thumb and suffered a chipped bone. Despite the injury, he batted .318 in 1932 and helped lead the Washington Senators to the World Series in 1933.
An interesting side story is that Joe Cronin married Mildred Robertson, who was the niece of Senator’s owner Clark Griffith. While on his honeymoon in 1934, the Boston Red Sox approached Clark Griffith with a trade offer: $250,000 plus shortstop Lyn Lary for Cronin. Cronin agreed to the deal and the Red Sox signed him as player/manager. He served as the Red Sox manager until 1947 and then general manager to 1959.
