Fun Fact: Jimmie Foxx, nicknamed the “beast”, was feared by pitchers. Yankee pitcher Lefty Gomez, claimed “He wasn’t scouted, he was trapped”. And in the 1992 movie “A League of Their Own”, Tom Hanks loosely based his character Jimmy Dugan on Jimmie Foxx. But truth be told, Foxx was not as crude as portrayed by Hanks in the movie.
The year 1929 was Foxx’s first full year in the majors. He had come up to the Athletics in 1925 when he was about 17, from a minor league team in Maryland’s Eastern Shore League. Foxx proved himself a versatile player, handling any position except second base. Later in his career, he even pitched a few innings. Although he preferred third base, with the Athletics he became their first baseman, hitting .354 in 1929 in 149 games.
