Fun Fact: From 1913 to 1957, Ebbets Field was home to the Brooklyn National League baseball team commonly known as the Dodgers. Affectionately, the Brooklyn fans embraced ‘Dem Bums’ as they suffered through years of ineptitude and daffiness.
For example, in 1926 with none out and bases loaded, Babe Herman tried to stretch a double into a triple. The problem was that Chick Fewster and Dazzy Vance were already occupying third base. Third baseman Eddie Taylor tagged all three of them and left it up to umpire, Beans Reardon, to sort out who was safe and who was out. The incident led to the popular joke:
“I hear the Dodgers have three men on base!”
“Oh Yeah? Which one?”
The daffiness label was expunged in 1955 when the Dodgers won their first World Series over their rivals, the New York Yankees. Two years later the Dodgers would break their fans hearts when they packed their bags and moved to Los Angeles.
